special lecture by one of the Bay area’s top magicians, David Gerard. Due to continuing
heavy rains and flooding, President David Martinez restricted the meeting to
on-line only. The lecture, on January 11, attracted dozens of Zoom participants.

<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">After an introduction by Colin
Cloud, David gave an action-packed, no-holds-barred extravaganza of a talk on
what it takes to be a magic professional and what he was doing to try to
achieve his aspirations. With great energy he explained the essential marketing
concepts he used, the need to identify one’s desired market and how to go for
it, the necessary aspects of becoming professional – image, clothing,
networking, web site, responsiveness, pricing. He emphasized the need to choose
how one keeps score to know how well goals are being achieved, and how he imposed
on himself the highest of goals.

<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">In the second part of the evening, David focused
on some of his favorite effects, those he did for attendees close up before or
after his set show: a stunning card effect, an interactive coins across, and some
classic mind reading. He enthusiastically went over what he had kept or
discarded over time in the constant search to improve their presentations—to
become memorable to those people who next need to hire an entertainer.

held its Stage and Parlor competition in person for the first time since the
start of the pandemic. Audience members attended both live and on Zoom, and all
magician were allowed to cast ballots. There were six performers and only one
competition division.

<span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">

proceedings by making colored streamers appear and disappear and defying
gravity with a glass off water. A spectator mixed up a Rubik’s cube for Jonathan
Chen, and it was found to match the arrangement of two other cubes; then all
became magically solved. David Martinez demonstrated three psychic abilities,
including drawing the animal a spectator was thinking of. Jeffrey Friend told a
spooky story of a chain letter that was destroyed and made whole again. James
Chan found a spectator’s card on Instagram and pulled it out of his phone.
Meriam Al-Sultan pulled off her woolen cap and, under the close supervision of
two spectators, caused a candy egg to disappear and reappear from it several
times, then drew from it glass of water.

<span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">

scoring was very close. First Place went to Meriam Al-Sultan and Second Place
to David Martinez. The MC for the evening was Gary Goldberg.

Come on out to support your fellow magicians as they present their best material in a parlor setting... think the Parlor of Prestidigitation at the Magic Castle (without the cover charge).

And be sure to bring your friends and family because magic is always better when there are more people to enjoy it! Your guests can be fellow magicians or, preferably, non-magicians who love magic.

The performances start at 7:30 p.m. sharp! We'll be at our usual location at Yu-Ai Kai Senior Center, 588 North 4th Street, San Jose, CA.

Sign up to perform!

Whether you're a past winner, a brand-new entrant, or something in between, now's your chance to share your routines and show off your skills. This is a great, low-stress way to hone your act and get feedback. Remember: The goal is to do your best and not focus on winning. Just have fun!

If you're thinking of competing, please keep in mind the following information:

Parlor is defined as an act presented in a formal stand-up setting with a sound system and curtains. There will be 5-6 rows of seating.

But remember that we don't have raked seating, so be aware that people in the 2nd or 3rd row will not be able to see the top of a table.

All paid members are allowed to compete, including past winners.

If you've won in the past, you must perform a different act.

Acts should be around 6 minutes long, so start timing yourself. (Depending on the number of participants, this number may be larger or smaller.)

Check out all the competition rules.

To sign up, send an email to president@ring216.org.

David H. held its first live, in-person Close-Up competition since the beginning of the
pandemic. There were nine competitors and a good contingent of audience
attendees, with more watching on Zoom. Only those attending in person were
given ballots to vote.

In the Standard Division (those
who had not previously one a contest), Jeff Friend divined a word that a
spectator selected from the collected works of Shakespeare; Jonathan Chen burned
people with his version of changing dollar bills to hundreds; Syd Kashima transformed
a selected card and then teleported it to his pocket; and the card a spectator
selected from Mitch Kothe turned out to be the only non-blank card in the deck,
and then vanished to reappear in the card case.

In the Masters Division, Meriam
Al-Sultan caused two selected cards to fuse together in a most off-beat manner;
James Chan performed an ambitious card routine and three-card monte; Tom
Collett brought aces to the top of a spectator-shuffled deck and then used them
to make coins appear and gather together; John Morgan performed a routine in
which red and black cards outfoxed the magician, and then showed how knotted
handkerchiefs can mysteriously become undone; and Calvin Tong dazzled with
sleight of hand involving three coins that underwent multiple transformations.

The winner of the Master’s
Division was Calvin Tong. The People’s Choice Award in the division was a tie
between Calvin Tong and James Chan. The winner of the Standard Division was
Jonathan Chen, and the People’s Choice was won by Mitch Kothe.

It felt very good to have everyone back seeing
live magic again.

Bring your friends.
For the first time in three years, Ring 216 will host an in-person competition... the 2022 Close-Up Magic Competition on Wednesday, October 12th.

Come out to support your fellow magicians as they present their best material in a formal close-up setting. And since magic is always better when there are more people to enjoy it, bring your friends and family!

The performances start at 7:30 p.m. sharp! We'll be at our usual location at Yu-Ai Kai Senior Center, 588 North 4th Street, San Jose, CA.

Masking policy
Performers can perform unmasked. We will ask audience members to wear masks.

There's still time to sign up.

The goal is to create an atmosphere as close to a formal close-up environment as possible. If you've visited the Magic Castle, picture its close-up room. Guests will join together in groups and will be seated typically in 1-3 rows arranged in a semicircle. The last row will likely be standing to allow all to view the table.

You'll perform your act up to 4 times for different audiences, depending on the number of guests in attendance.

All paid members are allowed to compete.

Acts must be no more than 6 minutes long, so start timing yourself. Note: We may increase this limit based on the number of participants (fewer participants would mean longer acts).

The competition usually has two divisions: Masters Division is for previous winners of any competition; Standard Division is for everyone else. Each division must have at least four competitors; if not, we will have a single division.

We hope have at least many non-magicians among our audience members, and we'll try to mix the non-magicians throughout the groups.

If you've won in the past, you are free to compete, but you have to perform a different act.

Check out all the competition rules.

Sign Up Now

We can't wait to see you there!

David H. His magic was innovative, inspired other magicians, and roused applause from audiences around the globe with its fresh originality.

In 2009, Jeki won a close-up magic award from the International Brotherhood of Magicians, the world’s largest organization of magicians.

Since then, Jeki and his magic have wowed audiences in England, France, Sweden, Italy, Japan, China, and many other countries including Scotland where, as a member of SNAP, one of Korea’s biggest magic shows, he was invited to perform at the famed Edinburgh Festival.

Jeki has also graced the stage of the incredibly popular hit show America’s Got Talent. Over 13 million people watched him perform his own unique style of close-up magic before an impressed panel of celebrity judges. Even the infamous Simon Cowell was left stunned by what he had just witnessed.

<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">Mitch Kothe introduced creative
close-up magician Justin Miller at the Ring 216 online lecture of June 8, 2022.
With cards and coins Justin demonstrated his outside-the-box solutions to creative
magical problems.

<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">In his hands, a card case with
deck inside disappeared and turned into the folded selected card. Four coins
suddenly appeared arranged in a square on the table. He changed a half dollar
into a Chinese coin using a new “drop” technique that enthralled the technical
coin magicians. Then three coins passed from a box into a shot glass one by
one. A highlight of the evening was Justin’s “shadow” technique, creating a
series of eye-popping effects: a coin dropped from one hand to the other
vanishes midway through its journey, a card visibly changes as it is dropped on
the table, three cards disappear one by one thin air. Justin closed with his version
of a classic Paul Harris effect: a mirror causes a coin to appear, which multiplies
into three coins, and then everything vanishes.
